congatec - a leading provider of embedded and edge computer technology - announces its strategic partnership with SYSGO, Europe's leading provider of real-time operating systems for safety and cybersecurity applications.

The first implementations, which can be certified up to ASIL B or SIL 2 in appropriate designs, are made available on x86- and Arm Cortex-based Computer-on-Modules. A typical application is the Safety Element out of Context (SEooC), as defined in ISO 26262.

The full-service offer offered as part of the new partnership agreement is intended to simplify and shorten the development process for safety-critical systems. It includes comprehensive certification support for the various safety standards - analogous to the ICE 61508 standard for functional safety of electronic systems. Support for the SYSGO PikeOS RTOS and hypervisor-based platforms ranges from railway applications (EN 50129 / EN 50657) to commercial and agricultural vehicles (ISO 26262), civil aviation technology (DO 254) and PLCs in automation and process control (IEC 61508) up to medical applications (IEC 62304). Customers also benefit from the PikeOS EAL3 + security certification according to the Common Criteria Standard.

“The partnership with SYSGO extends the scope of the existing congatec platforms for automation, collaborative robotics and rail technology to include safety-critical systems. And this cooperation makes a lot of sense for both partners, as the latest platforms from NXP and Intel make it possible for the first time to develop functional, safety-critical systems without additional hardware. The aim of the partnership is to use this opportunity and make it available to the customer with significantly reduced effort, ”explains Christian Eder, Director Marketing at congatec.

“In order to reduce development and certification costs, manufacturers of functionally safety-critical equipment rely on the use of pre-certified COTS software and hardware. This accelerates the development cycle, reduces the design risks for safety-critical devices and lowers the certification costs. With SYSGO as the leading European RTOS provider, we now have the right partner to offer such packages for Safety & Security from stock - also in combination with any customer-specific design service that is required at the carrier board level, ”emphasizes Martin Danzer, Director Product Management at congatec.

“The strategic partnership with a leading global provider of Computer-on-Modules enables us to offer our customers scalable, integrated hardware and software platforms that shorten the time-to-market for complex embedded and edge computing projects. The use of multicore technologies and the integration of security and cybersecurity functionalities in an all-in-one solution will give our customers a valuable competitive advantage in their markets and at the same time address the increasing connectivity-related cybersecurity challenges, "says Etienne Butery, CEO of SYSGO.

A strong basis of trust is essential for the safety & security of applications in environments that are part of critical infrastructures (KRITIS), as specified by the Federal Office for Civil Protection and Disaster Assistance (BBK) and the Federal Office for Information Security (BSI). Functional safety devices in critical infrastructures in harsh environments are found primarily in the transport and traffic sector as well as in the areas of energy and water supply.

Developers of IEC 61508-compliant functional safety applications need embedded and edge computing platforms that are ready for certification - including drivers, BSPs and comprehensive documentation for the respective certification. For this purpose, the new congatec solution platforms will contain a safety-compliant computing kernel based on SYSGOs PikeOS RTOS and hypervisor with Linux as well as certifiable BSPs. The first platforms based on Intel and NXP processors target mobility applications for the rail and commercial vehicle markets, including transportation logistics. All common standard communication protocols for use in functional safety applications - such as Ethernet and serial interfaces - are supported. The turnkey solution platforms are also supplied with the relevant documentation to simplify reuse in customer-specific certifications and documentation. They cover all hierarchy levels and are structured by requirement IDs - including traceability. This significantly reduces the complexity of the process for OEMs. You also benefit from competent contact persons for questions about the implementation of the security-relevant software and end customers an expert is available for questions about the security-relevant software.
